Hyunsoon Whang, Piano
Korean American pianist Hyunsoon Whang divides her time as a performer and a teacher. She began her piano studies at the age of four and has performed in Europe, Australia, Iceland, Asia, Canada, and nearly all fifty states in America. Equally versatile as a soloist and a chamber musician, she has collaborated with noted musicians including Alexis Weissenberg, Leonard Slatkin, Joel Revzen, Michael Tree, and David Kim. Her most recent recording of late Brahms works was released in December 2024. She is on the Oklahoma Touring Artist roster and is a frequent guest artist with the Florida Chamber Music Project.
A dedicated educator, Hyunsoon has taught and nurtured generations of piano students. Her former students are working as performers, educators, and church musicians world over. She has given masterclasses in several countries and adjudicated many state and national competitions. She regularly presents interactive recitals for rural public school children, fostering a love of classical music for the youth. She is a recipient of the Oklahoma Governor’s Arts in Education Award and was recently selected as the 2025 Distinguished Teacher by the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association.
Whang studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the St. Louis Conservatory, The Juilliard School, and received a doctorate from Indiana University under the tutelage of the legendary pianist György Sebők. She is Professor of Piano at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma where she holds the McMahon Endowed Chair in Music. During summers she teaches at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. Besides teaching and playing the piano, she enjoys traveling, practicing yoga, and being a supermom to her veterinarian daughter Courtney. She lives in Medicine Park with Callie, a Pitbull mix rescue.
